HR Basics: Employee Wellness

In general, wellness describes our happiness, confidence, physical condition and overall outlook on life. Organizations can make a substantial difference in their employees’ lives by including wellbeing or wellness principles in their benefits programs. Successful organizations recognize the importance of healthy and engaged employees and support employees on their own wellbeing journey.

Employer-sponsored wellness programs come in all shapes and sizes. In general, these programs attempt to address body, mind and pocketbook―helping employers reduce benefit costs and lost work time, while increasing employees’ engagement and performance. In general, wellbeing describes our happiness, confidence, physical condition and overall outlook on life. The key aspects of total wellbeing can be broken down into five elements: career, financial, physical, emotional and community. According to research, 28% of adults are not thriving in any element, while just 19% are thriving in four of the five elements. Employees with low wellbeing are the source of immense healthcare costs and lost productivity for organizations.

Successful wellness programs focus on providing you with tools, resources and opportunities to develop and strengthen each of the 5 Essential Areas of your Total Wellbeing. Understand that every person is different, so the program is set-up to be tailored to meet your needs, interests and goals.

Glad to see EMOTIONAL addressed here. My research on "work hurts" is showing – interestingly – that many staff want to work through their work hurts with others in guided, social, supportive programs that rebuild their productivity, confidence, and focus.
