Sugar: The Bitter Truth

Sugar: The Bitter Truth

(1:06 – Start of Presentation) Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. Recorded on 05/26/2009. [7/2009] [Show ID: 16717]

I was basing my liquid intake on pure fruit juices. Could I do EFFECTIVE damage control by diluting it 50% with filtered water? Logic says 50% less sugar when diluted with filtered water. Half the price per cup, 50% less of everything damaging AND
I find it tastes the same down to ~40% real if everything starts right. It till pleases the tongue. Problem solved, no?

Greeting to everyone here! I came here for an advice. I’ve quitted white sugar almost a year ago and don’t regret it. However, I still eat fruits, honey and other carbohydrates. I’m 17 and my goal is weight gain, since I’m underweight. What should my relationship with carbohydrates/fructose be?

I haven’t had a soft drink in over a decade. Nor do I drink fruit juices. I typically eat one small high protein meal per day and almost no carbohydrates. You would think I would be skinny. However, I suffer from Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and a slow metabolism. Having said that… I am about 15 lbs. overweight. I cannot even imagine how fat I would be if I ate like the average American… I would weigh 1000 lbs.!

Very informative. In India we made our food from scratch, so in general less exposed to processed food. However, now a days people specially children like fast food a lot, so the danger of added sugar in these processed food is a harsh reality.

Fat = Bad came from the McGovern beef death study…..because McGovern was politically oppositional to beef producers. The fat war came directly from a crooked evil politician

Oddly the whole grain and seed bread in the UK almost never has sugar or any type of sweetener.
I’m keto so bread I don’t touch so doesn’t affect me.

Three weeks now with no sugar. I’m a major sugar addict, who starting counting calories, but only so I could meet my "sugar quota" with less guilt. Those slabs of red velvet cake at Safeway are my cryptonite. I would cut back on my lunch and dinner portions so that I could continue my sugar intake. It is tough as heck to quit this addiction! Presently, I went from 200lbs to 193 in 5 days. Water retention is also down. Looking better, but struggling. I will keep going!

I really enjoyed this lecture. As a product of a household that banned soft drinks and chips and junk food, I was lucky. I still sneaked junk food and soft drinks, but when I grew up I realized the wisdom of my parents. My grandfather saw me drinking a Coke once and said, “You drink that stuff? They use that to take rust off cars!”
So in fairness to Coke, it does have some usefulness!

Have the food companies come up with a new name for HFCS in order to deceive people? IF so, what is that name. It seems just like the underhandedness of these companies do to make money and fool people thinking that the poison that they’re taking in is okay.

I stopped eating sweets and cakes in 2019 (I had already stopped drinking soda), and while I had a small handful of cheats since then my craving for sugars has entirely disappeared. A few days ago, I decided to try Japanese cheesecake with caramel and I legit felt sick and dizzy after it. Really this stuff has no place in our bodies and diets, stopping it was the single best decision I ever took.

I quit sodas decades ago and in 26 yrs I can count on one hand the times I’ve eaten at McD , BK, DQ, KFC . Although IM in denial about ice cream and do partake occasionally. Im still high school weight 175 , 12 body fat and staying in shape is relatively easy , 3 to 5 times a week at the gym and dont snack late. The reason I quit Coca Cola is I found out there’s 12 spoons of sugar in one bottle. Would i put 12 spoons in a glass of water and drink it?
