Dear Mimir, the physical definition of work done (energy) is the force done times the distance it has travelled. For example, one Joule is the enery required to move one newton of force one meter. One kcal is the energy required when doing a force of one newton for 4200 meters. This relationship does not take into account the power developed (power being the work done per unit time). By this definition, walking one kilometer requires the exact same energy than running one kilometer, the only difference is that since when you run you output more power, you will travel that kilometer faster than when you walk, being more time efficient. The only way running burns more calories than walking is if you run and walk for the same amount of time. Its not rocket science.
