This video is intended to be informational only. It is not a medical consultation, nor is it personalized medical advice. For medical advice, please consult your physician.

The best diet for kidney function varies depending on your percent of kidney function, or your eGFR estimated glomerular filtration rate. Be sure to consult your physician, and ask what your EGFR is. If your EGFR is less than 60 milliliters per minute, then you will benefit from a kidney diet. Remember, today I’m going to give you some guidelines for the kidney diet, but you need to consult your physician, and your nutritionist, to find out the specifics of the kidney diet that are best for you. Okay, let’s get started. Five tips for the kidney diet, how to eat properly when you have kidney disease.

5 Kidney Disease Diet Tips

1. Protein Intake
2. Practice Low Salt Intake
3. Proper Potassium Intake
4. Phosphorous Intake
5. Water Intake

These are some general guidelines on a proper kidney disease diet, how to eat properly with kidney disease. And I threw in some tips on how to try to prolong your good kidney function if you have no kidney problems. I just want you to live your healthiest, happiest life.

You know what stinks? "Servings" on nutrition labels. This forces you to do math in the store to figure out how much you’d really eat in a day. In other countries they provide info "per 100 grams." And of course, they’re used to the metric system. The US could just do "per 4 ounces" which is approximately equal to 100 grams. (It’s actually 104 grams.)

    Hi Dr. Fritta ,
Thank you for your medical professional tip on kidney diet .I had a colic kidney problem diagnosed in 2000 . Since than I had my left kidney removed in 2004 .
Since 2004 , I now live a normal life with a single kidney for the past 18 years !
Primarily I am from Papua New Guinean male 67 years old and still teaching after I was retired from active teaching back in 2004 on Medical grounds .
I was offered a teaching job in 2020 and am actively working and I am planning to call it a day by the end of 2023 . Maintenance of kidney in my experience is having enough water intake and careful with salty foods and a having a daily stroll the helps the heart and adiquate walking exercise for the healthy function of your heart.
Strikely be aware of junk food such as KFT and Macdonald products etc , etc…
I have never been to a Doctor for even a medical check . I have a strong belief to sustain my diet through careful dietary intake over the past 18 years .
Nevertheless I do acknowledge your professional advice for all kidney patients. Merry Christmas and Happy prosperous new year.

Hello doctor and thank you for the advice, I have stage 3 kidney disease and have a eGFRcr of 56. I’m very confused about my protein intake. You said it should be between "0.6 Grams per kilogram and 0.8 Grams per kilogram." I have no idea what this means or how to measure it. I’ve quit all meat and gone on a plant diet but I have no idea how to convert your information into actual food. Can you help with a recommendation? Thank You!!

  7. Wilfredo Quintana on March 3, 2023 at 8:57 am

  41. Evelyn Green on March 3, 2023 at 9:40 am

I am stage 4 CKD , GFR is 27, CHF since 2010 ,diabetic I haven’t had meds for that in about 3 yrs, my B/P is stable , I finally learned to maintain it for the past 2 yrs. I’m only allowed fluid intake of 32 Oz a day! I know sometimes I go over! I have osteoporosis, I take vitamin C 2x a day! He renctly taken me off the calcium pill I took 1x month, because of my numbers were too low involving my kidneys. I’m lost I don’t know what to do. I don’t eat much, but I’m sure I’m eating the wrong things! Somedays I try to eat and can’t, I vomit really bad on these days. I was told I needed to eat a plant- based meals. Now this is where my problem starts, I have no clue! I use too be 235lbs , I lost the weight unknowingly. I was 180lbs after I first lost weight! I had fluid on my lungs a 1 1/2 ago went to 200lbs, just recently I lost some weight and down to 193 lbs, try for 150 lbs. My husband passed Aug 2018 and now I’ve lost my ability to cook so I eat out( bad) I been doing smoothies if I can! Even drinking smoothies is wrong for me listen to this video ( spunch, or kale, bananas as main ingredients) Most of the time I cook food and don’t eat it or I’m taking a few bits and done with it. I’m so confused and screwed up on what I really need to do and not do. I’m 63 yrs old , 5’6", 193 lbs! My main problem I believe is readying too much info on what I need to do and don’t do! My doctor recent wanted me to take the kidney class. Things I hear makes me feel as if I’m going down hill! Such as ( just incase) I don’t like that, it doesn’t sound right too me! I was upset because I didn’t even know I had this disease until I was Stage 4 GFR was 30, but my last couple of test be 27. I’m not sure what else I need to say!

You are a god send. Finding your advice is going to help me SO MUCH. I am a mess and I really needed someone caring to inform me of what I need to do or not do. All I seem to get are prescriptions and tests, with no hope. Thank you for doing these videos.

  49. joe towliati on March 3, 2023 at 9:49 am

    Thanks, very good information.
I feel it would be more efficient if the video is broken by stage of CKD. So One can concentrate on the desired stage, and review others is so wishes. Thanks again.

I’m in stage 4 pkd. My doctor has never sent me to a specialist or anything and he informed me last time that my egf is 20. I’m trying to do my own investigating because he never sent me to a specialist or anything! I’m looking for a diet and information about this. He never tells me what I can or cannot eat either. He just said to drink water and avoid taking aspirin. I have been itching so bad in the last year or so and now am breaking out on my wrist and fingers. Is the kidney disease responsible for that?
