'Price we pay for caring for others': Compassion fatigue affects healthcare workers as pandemic c…

It’s been 18 months of masks, mandates and loss. More than a year of doctors, nurses and other medical workers fighting to save people infected by COVID-19. To cope with the ongoing loss, Jorge Fernandez, with Golden Valley Health Centers, said that many health professionals may be emotionally shutting down. “We’re tired of COVID, we’re tired of everything that’s going on in the world, so we get to the point where we become cynical, somewhat, and say, ‘I give up,'” said Fernandez, who is the director of behavioral health at GVHC. Compassion or empathy fatigue is more than just burnout — it’s the brain’s way of protecting itself from overwork, stress and trauma, Fernandez said. See more above.

    Medical staff sign up for their jobs and get paid nicely for what they do. I’ll trade them any day and take that paycheck.
