Scoliosis Diet & Nutrition

Scoliosis Diet & Nutrition

There are several theories associated with scoliosis, diet, and nutrition.

Due to a misconception, some patients think that scoliosis and nutrition are not related, but a patient’s nutrition will impact their scoliosis treatment and its outcome. Nutrition also affects recovery time when patients undergo bigger procedures as well.

When a patient goes through conservative treatment with the structural approach, where force is applied to their body to get to the spine and reduce their curve, the leaner the patient is, the better results the patient will obtain. Any type of rehabilitation, therapy, bracing, or exercise done to the body will respond better if the patient is fitter.

Thinking about the ease of movement, it is also easier for patients who are fitter to carry out the exercises given for their home therapy and other exercises.

Some studies have found that scoliosis patients may not be able to methylate vitamin B12 effectively, which aids spinal cord and nerve development during growth. This is a problem because their inability to methylate B12 causes patients to develop an uneven spine which eventually might lead to scoliosis. Methylated B12 supplements can help in this case, but the issue is that by the time the scoliosis is discovered, the spine might have a curvature of 25 degrees or greater, so no amount of B12 will reduce that curve.

In addition to B12 being important for scoliosis patients, it is needed for every neurotransmitter the human body makes. So, methylated B12 is needed for spinal health and other health benefits like neurotransmitters production.

B12 can be supplemented, and it is a particularly important supplement for scoliosis patients to be consuming. Overall, having a better diet means the patient will have better health and will respond better to any treatment given, not only for scoliosis.

Scoliosis patients should avoid fast foods and processed foods because these increase the body’s potential to gain weight, not lose it, because the more weight a patient gains, the less effective their scoliosis treatment will be.

Carbonated beverages like soda, especially the diet versions, should be avoided because they cause more weight gain than non-diet ones.

Foods with corn syrup increase inflammation, therefore increasing pain levels. Artificial sweeteners increase inflammation in the body and MSG, produces neurotoxins that increase pain.

Excess salt reduces the patient’s ability to lose weight, creates fluid retention, and produces pain, and patients do not respond well to treatment.

Alcohol and coffee can also increase pain and inflammation levels in the body, making it more difficult for scoliosis patients to tolerate treatment. When taken in the late afternoon, coffee increases cortisol levels and prevents a good night’s sleep, which impacts the body’s ability to rest and recover from pain.

When consumed, white flour is processed by the body as sugar, which will increase inflammation levels impacting patients’ tolerance to treatment.

Instead, scoliosis patients should focus on eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Their high water content helps the body get rid of toxins.
Also, when consuming protein is best for it to be non-processed and free-range. Like wild salmon, other cold-water fishes, free-range poultry, among others, and foods that are rich in natural calcium and vitamin D help with bone development.

The most important is water, staying hydrated, and consuming the right amount of water for your body weight. When exercising, the amount of water consumed should also be increased. For example, A 100 pounds person should drink 50 ounces of water per day. But if that same person is active with their scoliosis treatment, the patient should increase that by at least 25%, and that would be 75 ounces for the patient on this example. Water intake should be linear to the patient’s activity level unless a patient has a health condition that impacts their ability to metabolize water properly.

Nutrition for scoliosis is an ongoing thing. The better nutrition a patient has, the better results they will get for their scoliosis because they will be leaner, fitter and it will be easier to get results and maintain those results.
