Sugar: The Unsweetened Truth and What We Can Do About It

Sugar: The Unsweetened Truth and What We Can Do About It

Obesity is at the root of silent epidemics such as type 2 diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Laura Schmidt explores the causes and solutions, taking lessons from tobacco: reducing the availability of harmful substances reduces consumption, thereby reducing harms to health. She talks about the UCSF Healthy Beverage Initiative and the effects it has had on employee health. Recorded on 02/13/2020. [5/2020] [Show ID: 35586]

Obesity is caused by light. I’m not sure how long til the world of science works this out. The light issue messes with energy production and makes us lean into sugar and carb eating more than we would do otherwise. Light issues also reduce down melatonin production which regulates leptin and ghrelin level ie controls hunger.

So, you got rid of cheap soda but kept expensive Jamba juice? Looks like you took junk from the poor people and kept junk for the rich. Juice isn’t any better than soda because processing fruit to juice removes nutrients and fiber. You need to get rid of ALL sugary beverages – not just soda.

CLEAN UP YOUR MIND AND YOUR BODY WILL FOLLOW!!! All processed foods need a warning on them just like cigarettes….. the ingredients in this have been linked to metabolic syndrome cancer and diabetes……. Sounds simple to me. People legitimately don’t know the depth of eating processed food and sugar crap. Obviously we can’t stop the production of fast food and BS crappy grocery store food from existing ( like Tobacco industry) but, can’t see the delay in the FDA actually doing their job. Throw a warning on EVERY LABEL…. Just like the whole ban on trans fats. SUGAR IS JUST, IF NOT MORE, EVIL AS COCAINE!!!! And oh Ya Gov if your listening….. how about a ban on that ROUNDUP poison that you are killing us with!!!!

Don’t forget to count your ethanol grams like fructose (see Richard Johnson’s: Nature Want’s Us To Be Fat; or David Perlmutter’s: Drop Acid)! 9 tsp added sucrose (38g) amounts to about 19g of fructose (or 6 tsp or 25g amounts to about 12g fructose). A 5oz glass of wine has about 14g ethanol. Drinking these things is much worse (quick pipeline to the liver) than when embedded in fruit (that must go through all sorts of processing). Johnson reports that about 5g fructose is safely handled in the intestines (before it gets to the liver).

  9. Dillon Miller on January 12, 2023 at 4:34 am

Juice is just processed sugar after step one of the process. The fruit itself acts as a time release mechanism for the sugar. Any liquid sugar, juice, soda, syrup, is like shooting up sugar as far as our bodies are concerned. It’s too much too fast and it overwhelms the system. Do that all day every day and the system breaks. Diabetes.

  12. Ahmad Ismail on January 12, 2023 at 4:35 am

I have a question… As replacement for sodas and other sweet drinks. I tend to drink juice without any added sugar or anything else. So basically just the fruit plus water. Is it just as bad? Genuinely curious

People who emphasize sugar as a problem seem to think that our consumption of animal foods is not a problem. Its sugar, animal foods, processed foods, and lack of fruits and vegetables that are the problem. The focus on one as a scapegoat won’t solve the problem.
We are eating more calories of all macros. This happens to all countries as they get more developed.

It’s the beginning of the end for these killers who call themselves mass "food companies" . Tax them , sue them, knock them down like we did the big tobacco companies at the end of the last century. Tax them to death. Halt their ability to entice. shut them down.

You are up against anti-science, anti-"big government" people who want to eat unhealthy foods. You have your work cut out for you. I would work with children to convince them about good food hygiene. I was influenced in part about spinach and milk in childhood by cartoons. What about Public tv to help children eat more healthily?

  30. John Dyer on January 12, 2023 at 4:56 am

You must remember the food industry is in business to make money. Our health is not their top priority.

Wheat, soy and corn is basically what the American people are living on and it’s not food anyway. Three things things that are grown in chemical laden ground that you can’t call soil anymore. And everything that the vast majority of the people are shovelling down their throats is this rubbish in different forms.

  34. Beaky Twitch on January 12, 2023 at 4:58 am

Fruit contains sugar and fructose, full stop. Fruit is supposed to be seasonal, but is available all the year around, and it is genetically modified. Therefore please do not give out the misinformation that eating fruit is somehow different, is somehow good for you.

  35. Pepper on January 12, 2023 at 5:02 am

Bollocks. China never got fat before the USA and neither did West Africa. Get off the soapbox. Most Chinese and West Africans still are not fat.

Timestamp 45:00…… those stats are the problem!!! I have ebt and I can use my whole allowance on soda if I wanted to. No tax paid. Hmmmmm🤔 ok might I add that I CAN NOT bye some healthy food products becuz apparently they don’t qualify. This is a BIG PROBLEM. Government wants a
    us sick!!! Period.!!!!

  37. Melissa Redwood on January 12, 2023 at 5:04 am

So, allow companies to addict the population, then tax the population to punish them for being addicted. No wonder the government isn’t stopping the companies from selling addiction to children as long as the government is getting cut in on the profits that come from selling addiction and disease to the citizens.
This lady seems to think it is a wonderful plan to incentivize the government to allow companies to profit off addicting children to alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, sugar and whatever other addictive additives are legal to add to food and drink.

  44. Efil blaise on January 12, 2023 at 5:18 am

This is so much misinformation. High fat diets are the main culprit for the obesity epidemic. And we have evidence that we can reverse type 2 diabetes in patients by increasing the amount of sugar and very low fat diet. It’s not the sugar that is the culprit. It’s the high fat with the sugar. Nobody on a sugar water and rice( carbs) is going obese or have type 2 diabetes. It’s the fat with the sugar that causes the problems. Like ice creams and high fat processed snacks like snickers or a Mars bar for e.g. It’s too stupid to think that sugar is the culprit when the fact is every cell in the human body runs on sugar(sucrose). There is no evidence that a high carb and low fat plant based diet is going to cause obesity or diabetes.

  45. Phoebe Graveyard on January 12, 2023 at 5:20 am

I have difficulty believing that map. Chinese people are not all obese and Russians are not all skinny, in Russia, half of the men look like Boris from Rocky and bullwinkle. Is Russia not reporting and China considering a bmi of 20 to be obese?

  46. Tracesprite on January 12, 2023 at 5:20 am

Does this rise in obesity also coincide with the arrival of mobile phones? More and more people spend our time crouched over a phone rather than moving around. Also more of us wake ourselves up at night by looking at our phones, thus switching our brains on and getting less healing sleep?

It’s pretty ironic that the ad below this lecture on YouTube is for an insulin pump…

  48. Shar Roon on January 12, 2023 at 5:22 am

I think the sheer amount of ultra processed food leads us to believe it is normal, acceptable and safe. Most people are eating it so how bad can it be, right? Unfortunately it’s very bad.

  49. Beaky Twitch on January 12, 2023 at 5:24 am

Curiously tobacco smoking had somewhat protected people from sugar bellies, metabolic syndrome diseases and Parkinson’s disease. The reason why is that smoking inhibits the presence (or action) of a salivary enzyme called ptyalin that breaks down starches to glucose. (Digestion starts in the mouth !) When formerly heavy smokers managed to stop smoking their body weight ballooned, much to their puzzlement because their diet had not changed…
By doing a starch / iodine test I was able to prove that this was happening 1/ to a heavy smoker 2/ to a recently ceased smoker 3/ to a non smoker, all in the same demonstration / experiment with all 3 people present.

  50. ariyanto lim on January 12, 2023 at 5:24 am

So diet in high fructose is considered as risk factor for diabetes and liver disease? I think we need a special study about this because diet which include high amount of fruits is also tend to be high in fructose. Any counter effect from the fibre to this? Btw im not from scientific community, so I really wish for a kind scientist to explain me the things in simple way
