The Dark Side of Rich Kids Volunteering Abroad | Informer

Voluntourism is when primarily western, privileged do-gooders pay for the experience of doing charity work abroad. But according to this ex-voluntourist, the orphanage she thought she was building was actually disassembled and remade throughout the night.

Not only that but children were dirtied up to make them look poorer to add to the voluntourists’ experience. Children were made to sing and dance for them – and worse.

We give an inside glimpse into this sham world, where people pay for the experience of charity without actually helping locals – and often even making their lives worse.

I’m slowly growing skeptical of charities.
I remember hearing a BBC story was proudly talking about how a charity was teaching people who lack basic plumbing in Afghanistan about a piece of modern art.
The piece of art was a disconnected graffitied toilet.

I remember another time how a magazine that often talks about poverty and homelessness in the US said that they raised money to teach kids Economics.

These things sound like stories from the Onion.

None of this is a surprise, people go out of their way to appear righteous for their own benefit, that includes not only rich kids nut big businesses and corporations and celebrities in America

Terrible organizations exist; sad it took her so long to find out she worked for a bad one.

Do not allow this woman to discourage you if you want to give back then do it with your heart.

These are excellent excellent excellent videos – showing the absolute BULLSHIT that goes on in the world to paint this picture of *goodness* about people, not to really help others, but to make the former look good. That’s what *charity*, to a large degree, has become.

  9. Soney B on February 22, 2023 at 7:49 am

0:52 the fact that people are so torn about their work being redone shows that you don’t care about the community. If you really cared before you went to Tanzania you would’ve learned something about construction. But instead went to a 3rd world country without knowledge to swing a hammer. In conclusion I see no issue with the real construction workers taking apart shitty work so that a LIBRARY FOR CHILDREN would be a safe standing structure

Wow. So a white woman with a mask telling her story of "privilege " to go to Tanzania when she was unqualified, with other white people. A girl who " questions her sexuality". The whole agenda is here. This is pathetic. This women knew beforehand that she shouldn’t go bit went anyway. I guess because she is "white" and had money because that’s how bad white people are. A joke.

  20. Haxy Quinn on February 22, 2023 at 8:08 am

Let’s not even talk about the wealthy missionaries that come to latam to "covert" indigenous children and end up SA them. Because "you will be helping children in a very isolated location" is just code for "we have isolated these kids from their families and cultures and you can do whatever you want with them".

  25. william bradbury on February 22, 2023 at 8:13 am

This video is a great summary of a serious topic. It is important to remember though that real volunteer work can still make a meaningful difference in communities and there are organizations and programs that help do this.

If your volunteer organization allows you to take selfies and unrestricted photos, especially with children or other vulnerable groups this should be a massive red flag and can land you in trouble/prison.
If you donate money or nice things to a school or organization, you should assume it will not reach the target. (Bringing notebooks and stationery to directly give to each child in a class you are helping teach is probably ok).
If you are an adult working with children, you should expect some form of background check – if you didn’t get one then others in your group won’t have either (big red flag). Also volunteers should not be in a situation where they are alone with locals. This is for mutual protection.
Leave construction to professionals, however if there is a spare wall, designing a mural might be a fun project, a green flag for volunteer organizations is if they show you projects from previous groups. Painting markings for a football/basketball court might be cool as well, just get permission from the school or site owner before you start planning.

There are opportunities to help people close to home!! If you want to make a difference, try volunteering at a local charity first, soup kitchens for the homeless, red cross or age concern might be a good starting point (they may have opportunities to travel as well if you are genuine about helping rather than self-aggrandizement). Some experience in a charity like Age concern might better prepare you for overseas work.
All countries have vulnerable groups, you don’t need to go abroad. Some less economically developed countries have better social support and healthcare than parts of the U.S. (for example)

Research before travelling abroad!! Find out healthcare provisions and whether you have local embassy support. Learn a few basic phrases in the local language if you can, but make sure you know about things like local religion and legal differences with your home country. Find out if there are any taboo topics that you need to avoid. See if there are any nationals from that country that you can chat to before you go, buy them lunch/coffee and ask for tips (college/university students are often amenable but sometimes have had a fairly sheltered upbringing too.)

  28. Sandy Sandy on February 22, 2023 at 8:20 am

I have heard many fucked up things. I don’t have words to describe this one. I have kind of hatred for charity based organisation and all. But i never connected the dots between them and this voluantrism. This rabbit hole is a lot deeper than i thought, and now i understand why the foreigners to my country are interested in seeing poor and slums rather than tourist places.

I think another aspect of this problem isn’t with the people going on these trips, but the companies and universities that give preference to people who have these on their resumes.

  38. Aj00098 on February 22, 2023 at 8:27 am

Not gonna lie, always felt this business was shady. My mom being Mexican and telling me about the awful things that occur in Mexico (and other, poorer countries) and you having naive/ignorant people from the first world with money. Well, let’s just say it spelled like a recipe for disaster.

  39. Ninetta M on February 22, 2023 at 8:29 am

Excellent video. I worked for the UN. Most humanitarian business is self serving and disgusting. I resigned.

  40. James Walker on February 22, 2023 at 8:29 am

I was looking into conservation work. I was informed that it would cost me $4000, which would include a 6 week experience in Peru to help a community look after animals or I had the choice to teach kids… this didn’t include flights. And now after watching this, I do not want to put money into this.

I would rather go by myself and make sure that the money goes to those kids, clothing them. Feeding them etc.

    This entire thing is disgusting.

  41. Quantumwolf45 on February 22, 2023 at 8:32 am

Yup. Unfortunately not all non-profits are trustworthy and not all rich people who donate to charity and even volunteer can be trusted. Case-by-case basis. Yes, even Christian non-profits have been caught raping kids and human trafficking.

  44. Paul Merrill on February 22, 2023 at 8:36 am

volunteering is always always for the individual if u pay a lot of money of course there going to wine and dine u they want you to enjoy your trip. the people that that generally pay to volunteer are mostly not much help you are there because u paid the fact that everyone doesn’t know this I a bit dumb. The kids eat rice&beans like all the other kids in Latin America . They gave you better food because people complain a lot especially if there paying costumer . And I sure glad they fixed you unskilled work because that’s dangerous it would have been wrong not too . yea most of the money you give to a non profit mostly is to pay salary’s because very few people will work long term for nothing running a orphanage is very expensive mostly your money will go for bribes and red tape and corruption to allow things to run smoothly. I am sorry but this is how things work in the developing world rice beans and corruption. Ten years of volunteering on and off only offing my services not money. Not all places ask money most do not actually and not all are bad actually mostly they are good I helped orphanages and kids very very well taken care of food soft drinks new clothes best mattress no one for there gets sold or anything like that . Basically I can tell she has not been around much and has this only one experience Just a bit naive

  47. Brandon Rodriguez on February 22, 2023 at 8:40 am

I worked at the embassy in Haiti. So many of these groups would come and do nothing of real value. After awhile many were kidnapped and raped and we warned the groups yet they still came. The worst was a family that was wanting to come I denied the military officer as Haiti was a level 4 country, but I could not deny the family. I warned them not to come, but they still came. Once leaving the airport a team tracked them to the open road, pulled the car over stole everything and raped the wife and daughter on the side of the road. That dad had to live with that.

  48. SweetCake on February 22, 2023 at 8:41 am
