I was like.. “when I was younger?” You talk about 2014 like it was half a lifetime ago.. I know realize you may be so young it almost is half a lifetime ago for you 😂 sorry I’m 36..

This is the first video I’ve watched from you, and I’m so glad you popped up in my suggestions.

I have always found it strange that these wellness gurus/influencers have a constant tie to new age spiritualism. Like why is there always a heavy spiritual elemental to wellness, I always wondered about that.

who else noticed the random hand at 20:33?????? haha lol… loved the video 🧡

Sounds like just a bunch of flops of the investment industry. Actually ipo is most of the time not the best out for a company, mirror’s buy out, is a good out too.

So I know that everyone will have a different experience with this but I was a Glossier employee who was laid off during the pandemic and they were super great about it – giving us regular updates while they figured out what they were going to do re: the lockdown, addressing concerns well, and paying us our full wage while we were unable to work during the lockdown until they officially laid everyone off. That doesn’t in any way dismiss anyone else’s experience, but just wanted to share mine as a former employee (sales associate aka “editor”).

From what I’ve experienced from perfectionists around me, they not only beat themselves up because they can never attain real perfection, they beat everyone else up for never being perfect. It sometimes feels like abuse. The wellness industry reminds me of narcissistic perfectionist abusers.

  14. Caroline on June 6, 2022 at 10:55 pm

There was some interesting info in this video (I clicked to hear about Glossier), but I just don’t think it really goes to supporting your thesis statement, “the downfall of the wellness industry”. I’m assuming you chose this title for the click bait factor, which left me feeling misled. If this wasn’t the case, then, maybe keep practicing your essay writing and polishing your thought processes!

  15. A Z on June 6, 2022 at 10:56 pm

Reminds me of MAC, I applied and in the process they not only wanted me to re-itterate the whole history of MAC but just how lucky I was for being selected for the next step in the interview process. The whole time they asked me questions it seemed as if they took every opportunity to boast about how ‘exclusive’, or how ‘cool’ they are. Down the road after not accepting the job, i’m glad after hearing from many people that they have bad experiences shopping at MAC stores, because this air of ‘exclusivity’ they push. I think it shows that when a company pushes an image so hard it ends up pushing people away, much like GLOSSIER.

You drag the last word of your sentences a bit too much. It gets repetitive and unbearable after 5 mins. Couldn’t finish watching the video even though the topic was interesting.

I appreciate how you went out of your comfort zone to bring us this video. I recommend doing more videos in this format in the future. You’re kinda good at it🙂

some of my crazy anti vax toxic positivity family members were telling me I could cure my chronic auto immune disease if I stop taking my drugs, well guess what happened when I stopped taking my meds..ended up in hospital seriously ill..oh and can I mention when they had a medical condition guess where they went for treatment..um the hospital. so yeah I’m sick of these psychos who tell people stupid shit like this but yet they don’t even live by it

I’ve heard Colourpop doesn’t pay their employees livable wages either. Apparently it’s $14 per hour. That’s gross. I live in one of the cheapest states in the US and we can’t survive on that. Shit, we’re barely making it on $20 an hr. I’m not 100% sure that CP does this but former employees told me that so I figure it’s true.

  26. Hope Wren on June 6, 2022 at 11:12 pm

Tbh I like Glossier 🙂 Their products are good if you’re going for the lighter more natural makeup. You don’t have to have flawless skin to use them because I REALLY DONT! I’ve always struggled with my skin but I don’t like high coverage makeup as I have dry skin. If you don’t like Glossier then that’s your choice but you can’t state it’s not inclusive just because the products don’t work for you. So many products from other companies don’t work for me & my yellow undertone & dry skin but that’s fine because I’m not everyone 🤷🏻‍♀️ No product is EVER going to be for everyone as no one is the same & people look for different things from products 🤷🏻‍♀️

E.G I hated the Fenty foundation! It was one of the worst foundations I’ve ever tried but I know lots of others like it but it’s just not for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I never understood why pay for a co-working space when the library is litteraly free..

  32. Mazwane on June 6, 2022 at 11:20 pm

Honestly I personally never understood the wellness lifestyle. I’ve never had an issue with my body even after giving birth and gaining a looot of weight. It’s always been the people around me, mainly " man I am romentically involved with" who pointed out my insecurities which led to me clinging towards dieting etc.

Does anyone have the same experience?

  33. Bad Instructor on June 6, 2022 at 11:21 pm

I like how you compared a wellness industry to a almost cult like behaviour, because it really often seems like that and is the reason why in my eyes it’s so off putting. And I’ve also wondered, if the rise of the wellness industry has anything to do with poor health care. It seems especially in US where health care is not accessible for everyone, these people who preach wellness and become like cult leaders, truly thrive. When in comparison in my country, where we have universal health care readily available for everyone, I don’t really see prevalent figures to gain mass followings in the wellness industry. We have one, Maria Nordin, but people seem to be mostly dunking on her.

I laughed so hard at 1980s "exercise DVDs" lol. Great video though, glad I didn’t have to watch it on VHS. Thank you for covering wellness, I hope you continue to in the future as well.

  37. SJ Gee on June 6, 2022 at 11:25 pm

Glossier did a popup shop in Austin some years back. After seeing the brand hyped on social media so much I decided to go. After standing in line for several hours I finally got in, only to be VERY disappointed. The products were on par with Sephora brands quality wise…at comparable prices….for half as much product. Literally travel sized packaging. As much as I loved the branding I couldn’t bring myself to buy anything.

  42. The Jewellery Lover on June 6, 2022 at 11:28 pm

Good video. Regarding perfectionism, I think it is important that you bring nuance to the subject. I happily call myself a perfectionist and I have very high standards for many things. I enjoy seeking improvements, it is a journey of exploration of my limits and how I can push the envelope to be better everyday. For me it is not leading to anxiety or obsessive behaviours. You can have high standards yet also be conscious of your limits as a human and how to nurture yourself to be able to seek improvements in an incremental way.
What you describe as obsessive behaviours tend to come when a person has mild to severe mental health issues related to perfectionism. Thankfully not everyone is like that. As with everything nuance is key.

  45. Elizabeth Jote on June 6, 2022 at 11:30 pm

I see a lot of inclusivity in wellness. Wellness is not about a month’s practice, which is why they separate from the non-committal diet industry that uses them. 1 month isn’t a relationship with anything (or one) and wellness knows that.

  46. oyokubonis on June 6, 2022 at 11:32 pm

As someone who is working towards being an educator in the wellness space, this was SO well done and much needed for me to hear. Thank you for the time you put into this! Subscribed 🙂

  48. Alyssa Stewart on June 6, 2022 at 11:38 pm

The mirror thing is interesting. I was watching a video from the 80s that was trying to guess what future tech would look like and this is one of the predictions they made!

  49. Dezha Quinn on June 6, 2022 at 11:38 pm

Mirrors marketing really flopped. I’ve seen their ads on TVs when it was $995 and I really wanted one but found even that price was steep. Thinking about it I haven’t seen one influencer review it nor talk about it except in a video like this one.
