I see a lot of vegetables but where is the protein? No meat, poultry, fish, eggs or dairy.

Huge rises in the cost of living over the decades have far out-stripped incomes leading to longer hours at work to make ends meet. No time to shop healthily and cook your own meals. Step in the convenience food industry and hey presto a rising tide of obesity.

  4. Peter Azlac on September 28, 2022 at 7:19 am

It is the misinformation on saturated fats and red meat that is driving the process due to the alternative use of highlly inflammatory omega 6 shortening made from hydrogenated oilseeds like soya and corn oils combined with insulin reistance inducing high corn fructose syrups that are ubiquitous in processed foods. This is well proven science with the metabilic pathways well established showing these foods act via adverse effects on the gut microbiota and via epigenetics in downregulating beneficial genes and upregulating those in the immune system that promote the inflammatory cytokines that have been the main cause of death from Covid -19. It is no accident that countries withy teh highest consumption of processed goods have had the highest case and death rates.

  6. Tensai Juusan on September 28, 2022 at 7:21 am

This is exactly right – processed foods and soft drinks are the main cause of the obesity epidemic. But now "woke" medical professionals are attempting to pull the wool over your eyes by stating that obesity is mainly a problem of ones genes that is to say "It’s not your fault" and that we must see obesity (now a forbidden word) as healthy and attractive, and that we must be "body positive" and never have a sense of shame for being obese – for being a glutton, physically unfit, and physically repulsive. To do so is to be "phatphobic", a new made up word to shut you up. Obviously genes have an impact on propensity to obesity and East Asians have it in abundance but they also have much better eating habits and diet.

My diet is good, although it could be better. However the two things I do to maintain my weight and fitness (I would say I am fitter now actually) at 42 from when I was in my twenties is to keep fit 3/4 times per week in the gym along with regular aerobic exercise and stick to fixed meal times by never eating in between. It’s not hard really. People are just lazy and cannot control their food intake. Couple the two together and it is hardly surprising there are so many fattys wobbling around.

  9. Adele Halsall on September 28, 2022 at 7:23 am

I always find the term โ€œprocessed foodsโ€ a bit too vague as some people will include things like pasta and sourdough as processed (which they are) but these foods are healthy when eaten in moderate amounts. Also consider things like plant milks and hummus – processed yes, but can be made from simple ingredients youโ€™d use at home. Not everything processed is bad.

  10. The Food Inspector on September 28, 2022 at 7:23 am

I am British, but I live overseas. I just visited after a decade away, and people are so overweight and eat such crap, it is disgusting. The UK has a severe massive fat problem, and it seems acceptable to be fat when it is not. I eat simple, fresh, non-processed food. I’m fit, slim, never get sick and feel great! You can make a cheap and quick healthy meal, I do almost every day. Everything is a choice. I am guessing there are lots of excuses in the comments below by fat people.

  18. Conrad Vancouver on September 28, 2022 at 7:28 am

Just like taking on the tobacco industry. If it has a โ€œnutrition labelโ€, you probably shouldnโ€™t be eating it. Quitting sugar is easy – which eliminates all industrial โ€œfoodโ€.

  24. ZD H on September 28, 2022 at 7:38 am

But back in the day you could live comfortably on a single income so one partner, usually the wife stayed home and had the time to prepare meals. Now both partners have to work and after a 9-5 you only have a couple of hours in the evening to do your house hold chores, shower, eat and unwind before bed. Cooking a fresh hot meal every evening is exhausting and time consuming. Convenience food fills a void/need. Our lifestyle has to change in order for us to have more home cooked meals.

  25. Mike Ash worth on September 28, 2022 at 7:39 am

The doctors who say that there’s not enough evidence are probably being paid to do research by the processed food manufacturers. The manufacturers have enormous power to control opinions with their lobbying of the government and paying for confusing evidence to be produced. I’ve seen comments here saying we have no time to cook anymore, which is partially true, but I think that most people, if they were really aware that they are making themselves ill and shortening their lives by eating processed food, would make more effort to eat more healthily.

  26. beanxy on September 28, 2022 at 7:41 am

    Calorie deficit = weight loss
    Calorie surplus = weight gain
Youโ€™re definitely best off eating good whole foods as that will keep you fuller and give you more nutrients, however if you ate chicken nuggets 24/7 but were in a calorie deficit you would lose weight.

  27. John Doe on September 28, 2022 at 7:42 am

What’s really saddest about this is that corporations COULD have made convenient food, which two-earner households really need more, a great deal healthier than it is. They have used these products deliberately to addict people to as much sugar, salt, and fat as it takes to hit the "bliss point" of dopamine release. You can find, for example, bran cereals that are reasonably healthy, as opposed to the "breakfast candy" aggressively marketed toward children. This is not something to blame on consumers for cooking less, and certainly not something to blame on women for cooking less. This extreme demographic obesity is due mostly to corporate policies–just like the opioid epidemic. And should be treated the same way–with strict regulations, penalties, and lawsuits by those government agencies forced to pay for the health consequences.

As a single parent in the late 80s money was tight but we ate well ,I enjoyed cooking and making homemade pie’s etc, but we ate a lot of vegetarian meals too. I was born in 1954 and our meals were simple but home cooked with fish and chips sometimes on a Friday, I remember ready meals starting to come in in the late 60s,fish fingers vesta curries and the Wimpy burger bar opening. So much ready food and rubbish now and our bodies aren’t meant to have the additives and chemicals in food, it messes with your immune system.

Driven by the crap sold in supermarkets. Experts ? think that the people drive the food market. They don’t. It’s a myth spread by the profit hungry corporations. The people buy that which is on the shelves

  37. ML Wessel on September 28, 2022 at 7:58 am

Misleading optics and percentages that did not add up to 100% and the basics did not show the amount of oil, flour, meat, etc., or alcohol purchased. Common sense = you are what you eat. I never go out to eat other than fish and chips on family birthdays and do not eat meat and I cook everything from scratch, baking, too. I am overweight but not by much and not from store-bought snacks. Too many carbs in any form add weight, even healthy carbs.

Only ultra processed food in our house are weetbix, vegimite and cheese biscuits. Still we have heath problems associated with age. So pity generations that come after as it is no fun having chronic health problems.

  41. Futures on September 28, 2022 at 8:01 am

people are surrounded by a poisoned food system, everything is rushed, stressed and under these circumstances people are pushed into traps and there are entire industries trying to capture people in this way. As if the food industry will agree – like getting big tobacco to accept their death sticks cause cancer and a whole range of health issues.

  42. Seong Gi Hun on September 28, 2022 at 8:01 am

    Please stop saying ultra processed

  43. Hilary Knight on September 28, 2022 at 8:04 am

People will whinge that they don’t have time to make a meal from scratch. First, there are plenty of meals you can throw together in half an hour or even fifteen minutes (also you can batch-cook and freeze meals for busier days). Second, people seem to have a lot of time to scroll through garbage on their phones, play video games, etc. Priorities?

  44. a walk on September 28, 2022 at 8:05 am

This shows not only the expansion of the processed food industry but also the availability of factory produced foods and also other parts of retail. The use of computing in manufacturing processes and communications saw a step change in the late 1970’s and increases in production efficiency. Since 1980 there has been a big expansion of availability of everything from tools, vehicles and many commodities which is due to the internet, higher visibility and advertising. The way shopping has changed from smaller shops on the High street to the big supermarkets and DIY stores. As late as the 1990’s we in UK were still going to many small High street shops for items, but by the end of 1990’s you could buy all groceries in the big supermarkets and for DIY the big shops such as B&Q and the shopping malls started. UK had caught up with the availability boom that was seen in USA in the early 1990’s . Six years later in UK the shopping experience in UK was matching that of USA. There was a revolution in retail from 1980 to 1998 due to commercial computing developments, monitoring the sales and marketing and manufacturing processes and it is still changing.
It is also true that more people are now employed by government and as a result there is more demand for taxation and no longer can a household have only one person earning the income. To sustain government the system needs more taxes and that comes from more of the population going out to work to make a higher percentage of the workforce paying tax. VAT was introduced to have an even bigger tax take to fund this change.
Now almost 70% of the workforce are employed by government agencies, education, councils, health, amenities , armed forces , central government, devolved government and whilst those are "service" jobs they are still taxed to feed the administration of government. Direct government jobs also have exceptional high benefits such as pensions which all need to be funded by taxation. Salaries however in the main have not increased at the same level, but goods have become cheaper. These changes are what has driven the changes towards "convenience" foods as more people ( specifically women) are expected to work even when maintaining a family. This was not the case in the 1970’s as many women were looking after family in the home as a full time occupation. That situation was more relaxed and secure for children and is possibly why we see some behavioural changes now such as increased crime and violence in cities.

So the BBC blames the consumer – as usual. Nothing to do with the food triangle and too many carbs with too little natural fat being recommended, shoddy and misleading report.

  47. Jason Bourne on September 28, 2022 at 8:07 am

I’m away from home 11+ hours a day. There isn’t a single convenience food in my fridge/freezer. People who claim they don’t have time to cook a meal are either lying or they’re lazy. Also, it doesn’t take a huge amount of time to throw together a decent plate of food.

  48. The Truth Hurts on September 28, 2022 at 8:07 am

I think it has to do with culture too. I noticed living in the USA, it’s all about convenience because people are all about independence, working, living apart from family so they have to pay more for rent or mortgage. They do a lot of things themselves, end up needing to work more or more stressful job so they feel tired and don’t cook as much. But when I lived in Vietnam, I see many people live with family. Older generation cook for young. Even if young move away, they get roommates or like my cousins, all moved together to city and live in same home. Even if one marries, often times you still live with groom’s family or bride’s family. They look down on fast food or junk and keep watch of their health with fresh meals, lots of veggies. Fast food chains do not thrive in Vietnam because of culture and taste.

  49. Marsh Wetland on September 28, 2022 at 8:10 am

Yeah, I’m pretty convinced ultra-process food triggers binge-eating and overeating in general, because as he said in the other video where he punished himself with that food for a month, that food is hyper-palatable. When I cut it all out (because doc said I had to cut out bread, flour, gluten) I also cut sugar down to almost nothing (because I don’t need much sugar, and now no treats like licorice.) Well, I dropped a size the first month and the fat just disappeared. And the book Salt, Sugar, Fat will explain to you all the parameters and many of the tricks of hyper-palatable "addictive" food.

  50. chaz wyman on September 28, 2022 at 8:11 am

Sugar and refined carbs such as pasta, and bread are the biggest problem. And all the government advice to eat low fat has added to the problem, because food processing has replaced that fat with more carbs in ready made meals and low fat goods. Low fat means high carb. Carbs instruct the metabolism to build fat, and continue hunger.
