The surprisingly dramatic role of nutrition in mental health | Julia Rucklidge | TEDxChristchurch

NOTE FROM TED: Please consult with a mental health professional and do not look to this talk for medical advice as the intersection of mental health and nutrition is still an emerging field of study. We’ve flagged this talk for falling outside TEDx’s curatorial guidelines because it oversimplifies interpretations of legitimate studies. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this critically important talk, clinical psychologist Julia Rucklidge explores a range of scientific research, including her own, showing the significant role played by nutrition in mental health or illness.

Julia J Rucklidge, PhD is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally from Toronto, she did her training in neurobiology (McGill) and Clinical Psychology (University of Calgary). Her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions. For the last 6 years, she has been investigating the role of micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and more recently, stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The Keto diet and vegan diet people are fighting in the comments section about what ā€œnutritionā€ means. Back when I was a kid ā€œnutritionā€ was all about granola and not eating eggs. Then we arenā€™t allowed to eat granola because carbs. Now we canā€™t eat it because gluten. Now both of those reasons are being scoffed at and itā€™s ok to eat granola again because fiber. And also eggs are back because it turns out cholesterol isnā€™t really a thing! I donā€™t know what to believe! But I do know that all one thing and none of another thing is ridiculous. And I miss having orange juice with breakfast

My son has adhd and my daughter has an anxiety, disorder and depression with a lot of other physical symptoms we canā€™t explain . I wish I knew what exactly to give them or where Iā€™d get these micro nutrients they need and in what amount. Iā€™d do anything to get them better . My daughter canā€™t even attend school anymore due to panic attacks. So this is possibly going to affect the rest of her life and Iā€™m so worried.

It’s anecdotal evidence, of course, but from my personal experience the influence of a plant based diet ist massive!

  11. Janie Holland on November 22, 2021 at 1:13 pm

I went plant-exclusive vegan and lost 9 stone (126 pounds) in 17 months. I also got rid of suicidal depression for good without any changes other than the diet. I gained so much energy that I walk around 10 miles every day now. Meat made me so lethargic I couldn’t leave the sofa.

  12. Saiful Haque on November 22, 2021 at 1:17 pm

And What are those micro nutrition?

  13. ruthef7 on November 22, 2021 at 1:17 pm

100% my anxiety decreased by half after changing my diet

  14. Annina Salo on November 22, 2021 at 1:18 pm

I’m not so sure, I’ve been a vegetarian or pescatarian most of my life, eating quite a healthy diet with lots of veggies, but also depressed or anxious most of my life. If I go vegan, in 2 weeks I feel even worse. I am now considering whether I lack some nutrients you only get from meat… but that would be a massive step to take. I think there have also been studies that show that meat-eaters are generally happier than vegetarians!

Where are high dose micro-nutrients available? At what cost? Equal to pharmaceuticals?

  18. HIPNICITY on November 22, 2021 at 1:23 pm

Iā€™m detoxing from antidepressants & adhd meds. Iā€™m 61 and quit prescribe drugs on 4/1/21. It hasnā€™t been easy but I know itā€™s the right thing for me. SAD has been a factor and Iā€™m a bit concerned. Iā€™m trying to eat organic only and taking supplements.

  19. TomK. on November 22, 2021 at 1:23 pm

I wonder when I’ll be ALLOWED to buy those micronutrient supplements she PRESCRIBED to her test subjects.

Or when will I be allowed to KNOW what those doses were?

    And WHAT is a mega-dose of a micro-nutrient?

Iā€™m all for what you said until you honestly tried calling autism a mental health disorder.

Girl, autism is a neurodiversity, not a disorder. Iā€™m proudly autistic and am a healthier autistic for getting proper nutrition. It doesnā€™t eliminate my autism, but yes, I agree that eating better and getting the right nutrition totally helps.

12:49 yes, yes, and yes but there is no such thing as healthy fruits and vegetables. Whether processed or not. A Mediterranean diet is only better because it contains fewer plant-based products. It also contains plenty of butter, beef, pork, and eggs.

00:10 – ā€œIn 1847 a physician by the name of Semmelweis advised that all physicians wash their hands before touching a pregnant woman in order to prevent childbed fever. His research showed that you could reduce the mortality rates from septicemiaā€”from 18% down to 2%ā€”simply through washing your hands with chlorinated lime. His medical colleagues refused to accept that they themselves were responsible for spreading infection. Semmelweis was ridiculed by his peers, dismissed, and the criticism and backlash broke him down, and he died in an asylum two weeks later from septicemia at the age of 47.ā€ ā€” Julia Rucklidge, _The surprisingly dramatic role of nutrition in mental health_ (TED Talk) [00:10]

Every person benefits from a nutritional dense (meat + eggs + ofal) , non-processed, non-inflammatory, no grains, fruits, juices, starches, flour, all sugars, even no dairy diet; with optimal Vitamins like D, B12, etc.

Guess who told us to eat a carbohydrate, grain, sugar, flour, starch diet?
The governments, allopathic doctors, dieticians, etc.

Avoid processed seed oils, margarine, shortening.

Avoid statins; side effects are terrible.

Thought my sister was nuts when she told me consuming apricots sent her into a (temporary) pitā€¦ tested it and found I have the same result. Daughter doesnā€™t melt down when sheā€™s on a gluten free dietā€¦ definitely feel down more when consuming processed carbsā€¦

  44. chelsea dobson on November 22, 2021 at 1:55 pm

While I agree with the overall sentiment, how dare you categorize autism as a mental illness. The increase is due to better understanding of it and identifying more cases.
But yeah, eat fruits and veggies, people.

Starting a TED Talk by comparing your discovery to something as world-changing as early sanitation _and_ implying that anyone who disagrees with it is as foolish as a doctor who doesn’t wash their hands before delivering a baby is…a choice.

I started connecting these dots when I noticed my mood drastically changed (for the better) following my new found obsession with aƧaĆ bowls and smoothies. 100% fruit and sometimes honey/nuts. Only nutrient rich ingredients. Iā€™ve been having them 2-3 times a week. And I have been significantly less flustered, agitated , and absentminded :)!

Not sure how much of it is a placebo affect for me but Iā€™m not complaining šŸ™‚ (my wallet is the only one complaining a little as itā€™s not the cheapest food but itā€™s ok)
