Your Gut Microbiome: The Most Important Organ You’ve Never Heard Of | Erika Ebbel Angle | TEDxFargo

NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, this speaker makes claims about nutrition and the human microbiome with too much certainty for the current state of research. Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle discusses why the gut microbiome is the most important organ you’ve probably never heard of. The gut is the second brain, and gut health affects your overall health. This means that you are what you eat, but you are also the metabolites that live in your gut and produce the substances you need for emotional balance, energy level, and disease prevention. Poor lifestyle choices cause gut imbalances, which can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune diseases, and even anxiety and depression.

Angle talks about three critical molecules and how they work in the body to affect your overall wellness. She also shares some tips about what you can do to maintain a healthy gut microbiome through diet and lifestyle choices.

Entrepreneur and biochemist Erika Ebbel Angle, PhD, has dedicated her life to studying the gut. Dr. Angle is the CEO and co-founder of Ixcela, the Internal Fitness™ company. Ixcela evaluates the gut microbiome using a blood sample, and then offers personalized recommendations to restore gut health. Angle shares her lifelong love of science in many ways, including through her nonprofit, Science from Scientists, which brings scientists into classrooms to promote STEM careers and science education. A graduate of MIT and Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Angle is also a former Miss Massachusetts who used her platform to encourage students to pursue STEM careers and scientific discovery.

Erika Ebbel Angle, Ph.D., is the CEO and Co-founder of Ixcela, a biotechnology company aimed at developing tests and interventions to improve gut microbiome efficacy and health. She is also the Executive Director and Founder of Science from Scientists, an award-winning National nonprofit focused on improving Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) attitudes and aptitudes for children aged 9-13. Outside of work, Erika enjoys scuba diving, skiing, and classical piano. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Excellent talk. Gut management is something that was little known about until fairly recently. I’ve found out more about it by reading Prof./Doctor Tim Spector’s book, ‘The Diet Myth’ and his other book, ‘Spoon Fed’. For those that read my comment I’d recommend both books.

Tim takes a very technical subject and writes in a style that’s entertaining and engaging. Not the easiest of subjects to get your head around but it’s critically important to do so if you want to be healthy! Thanks to Erika Ebbel Angle for a this talk. 👍

She mentioned the 3 important groups but just barely (but quick flashed pictures of some) about the associated foods of so many, I wish she mentioned more of the simple & affordable alternate anti oxident foods( e.g.cabbage family, radish varieties, onion, carlic, ginger, turmeric, mint, basil, sage,.. variety of lentils, peas, pulses.., egg, sardine, mackerel,.., cheap plain yogurt/ yogurt drinks, non VINEGAR BASED fermented foods, etc, etc)
& finally there were few other MDs& Phds who all were racing to develop gut biotic SUPPLEMENTS in the last few years& always avoid talking about natural common foods but always hints about their Suppliments( sells ~$30-100+ for month..) insted, she gets kudos for talking about exercise, meditation, etc. Also good sleep important too.

Our gut, may be our entire physical existence is because of these microbes. If microbes play an important role in our lives, how important are these microbes in our soil, from which we get our food. A highly organic soil is key to a highly efficient physical being.

So many researches are pointing out the fact that an organic soil can tackle the biggest challenge faced by humanity today climate change.

Earth has different forms of life. Plants, trees, animals, birds, insects, fungi, bacteria, virus, etc. Yes there is always a predator for a prey but Humans should abandon this belief that everything is meant for them and stop over exploiting and give back to nature because it is the need of the hour.

If soil has trillions of species inside it, doesn’t it mean there is an entire universe under our feet. Heal soil, heal earth, heal ourselves.

I was diagnosed with beginning Lupus about 17 years ago after a blood test showed it. I had a lot of problems with my ligaments and bones. My doctor told me he could prescribe drugs, but it was better to change my diet. He told me no dairy products and no grains were the best things for me to do. I followed his advice and within a month all my symptoms were gone and after a new blood test it showed that everything was great. Up to this moment I feel fine now at age 73 and hope to continue to feel this way!

No more telling people to eat fish! That is NOT what they need right now!

  41. Renee C on October 20, 2022 at 9:09 am

The problem is that, even when you’re eating healthy the foods are so genetically engineered and even organic food isn’t really organic as they say and the meats and the veggies are full of pesticides and every product that that we use and container is all contaminated with toxins every single thing we breathe indoor or outdoors is full of toxins and this system has been made to tear our bodies down so that we all need to upgrade ourselves transhumanism. Unless you are rich enough to feed your family of your own land or real food the way it’s meant to be grown you pretty much are going to deal with health issues one way or another and the doctors aren’t meant to heal you they’re only meant to treat it which is more synthetic compounds in your body causing even more side effects / damage.

    BU Proud!!

  44. Guy Edwards on October 20, 2022 at 9:10 am

This video touches on a very important piece of a large overarching set of ideas: mental, physical, and dietary health are all interconnected parts of a single whole, and if you neglect one aspect, you effectively neglect them all.

I can say from first hand experience that there is nothing in the world more valuable than being wholly healthy; it’s literally the core difference between contentment and peace versus misery and stress. You can handle life and its cruddy tendencies with startling ease if you take optimal care of yourself.

I’m pretty sure if she was talking about money, the crowd would be more excited. This is great information and our health comes at a cost if we do not take care of ourselves.
