The role of food in health | Dr Rupy Aujla | TEDxBristol

“The biggest impact on your health is not with a blockbuster drug, it’s not with a new pioneering surgical technique, it’s with the simplest solution. It’s how we feed ourselves”.

Dr Rupy Aujla is an NHS doctor who believes modern medicine is fundamentally missing a focus on nutritional medicine. Despite diet being an essential ingredient to our well-being, medical students in the UK often receive just a few hours training in nutrition.

Rupy’s TEDx talk explores the medicinal effects of different ingredients and debunks some common ‘diets’, focusing on how we can make ‘culinary medicine’ rather than fad diets the default option.

Rupy founded ‘Culinary Medicine’ – a non-profit organisation – specifically to address this gap by teaching doctors and medical students the foundations of nutrition as well as teaching them how to cook.

In his role as clinical adviser to the Royal College of GP’s and more recently being accepted as a fellow on the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme – Rupy has big aspirations to bring the concept of ‘Culinary Medicine’ to the profession globally.

Recently Rupy and the Culinary Medicine team have successfully taught Year 3 University of Bristol Medical students as part of their undergraduate training and they’re working with University College London to deliver a course to their students this year.

Rupy is equally passionate about sharing good nutritional advice and delicious healthy recipes with the general public via his company ‘The Doctor’s Kitchen’. He aims to inspire patients about the beauty of food and the amazing clinical research behind the ingredients he uses. He has two best-selling cookbooks – ‘The Doctor’s Kitchen’ and his second book ‘Eat to Beat Illness’ which was released in March 2019 and quickly became a Sunday Times Bestseller.

Many studies have investigated meditation for different conditions, and there’s evidence that it may reduce blood pressure as well as symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and flare-ups in people who have had ulcerative colitis. Green essential and brahmi capsule form Planet Ayurveda can help you overcome the issues related to anxiety and stress.

There are a couple of statements that are wrong, if you eat a diet high in vegetables containing oxalates you will have kidney problems, the same goes for high carbohydrates plant foods.

Well said: having spent some time in medical care, I became aware that it would be quite easy to go down with scurvy in an NHS hospital. Having asked someone to bring me some fruit, I was advised not to eat a grapefruit, it would interfere with a pill I had been prescribed. When I took a look at what this pill was, I noted its long list of side-effects – likely reaction to the toxins contained therein. Contraindications for grapefruit: nil. I ate the grapefruit and not the pill. After I got home – this was a heart triple by-pass surgery – I dumped all the medication they’d given me a week later and felt better the very next day. That was a couple of years ago. I haven’t touched a pill since, nor any junk food. I’m 72, fit and well.

  28. Michelle S on April 26, 2022 at 7:18 pm

I had a terrible struggle to get a blood test on the NHS my gp wasn’t too happy to send me for a cholesterol check its one thing trying to stay healthy by healthy eating and exercise, another to establish a base line when the NHS is not geared towards investing in prevention

Brilliant, great presentation and tremendous information on eating healthy. Following a carotid artery blockage followed by a stroke and resulting Carotid endarterectomy in 2018 I decided to find out more about diet and healthy eating. Since then I have lost 3.5 stone, eat a mostly plant based diet, control alcohol intake to 10 units per week and follow the brilliant advice of a lot of your guests on the Doctors Kitchen like Pro Tim Spector & Pro Robert Thomas.
Thank you very much Dr Rupy.

  44. Hey delight_ph on April 26, 2022 at 7:32 pm

I saw an ad here in Youtube of a local department store offering discountts to those who will present a vaccination card.? Why arent they offering big discounts to their customers who are buying 50% or more of vegetables, fruits and other healthy products of their total purchases instead.? They know for a fact that prevention is better than solution or cure.
Ive noticed in some supermarkets, they even price vegetables and fruits way too high than unhealthy products. If these people really are concern, they should promote and support healthy lifestyle because I think this is a wake up call to all of us, we need to change our ways of living…we need to eat healthy.

  45. Eric Anderson on April 26, 2022 at 7:33 pm

I would add if cost is difficult to justify eating well/colorful grow what you can, you don’t need an expensive greenhouse/garden just some soil and a little knowledge. Great presentation.

Terrible to say that but only a few percent of population can afford to eat well, for others malnutrition is day by day reality even in the first world counties. If you don’t eat enough proteins food, meals with omega-3-6-9 lipids and your meals not diverse enough day-by-day you are from the second group.
